R-404A Product Details
R-404A Refrigerant or R404/R404A Refrigerant is a mixture of chemicals similar to other HFCs such as R-410A or R-134A. R-404A isn’t as popular as the 410A or the 134A it’s main applications are for refrigerated trucks, grocery store freezers, and ice machines. It’s main purpose is to serve as a replacement for R-22 and R-502 Refrigerant as both of these CFCs will be phased out entirely by 2020. Since R-404A Refrigerant is classifed as an HFC refrigerant you do NOT need a licence wit the EPA to purchase it.
It is important to know that R-404A is classified as an HFC refrigerant. I bring this up because it has been found that HFC’s have a high Global Warming Potential, or GWP. R-404A’s sister product R-134a has been phased out entirely in the European Union and the Obama Administration have taken steps in the United States to phase out 134a as well. Most sources are predicting a total phase out at around 2020-2021. Once it is phased out it is only logical to assume that they will come for other HFC classed refrigerants as well.
An alternative refrigerant has already been developed to replace R-404A. ThermoKing, a global transport refrigerant manufacturer, partnered with refrigerant manufacturer DuPont to form an alternative to the HFC 404A Refrigerant. Their partnership spawned the new refrigerant R-452A or Opteon XP44. In 2015 ThermoKing will offer a new line of trailers and trucks that will take the new R-452A and there are plans to release more in 2016. To be honest I’m not sure if R-452A will be the Refrigerant of the future for refrigerant transport, time will only tell.
